Interview Technique Preparation
I recently had a student who came to me for Interview Technique Preparation. He was just out of university and he had little experience of being grilled in a business interview. I’ll call him Jack.
I asked Jack for the information about himself that he had sent in his applications so that I could study the answers he had given to the questions in his application and the information he had offered up to put himself in a good light.
This Is Essential
If you work with me I need to know what ‘they’ know about you as this information will be used to interview you.
Jack didn’t fully appreciate my reasoning and so sent the information just a couple of hours before the lesson.
When I explained I hadn’t had a chance to read ‘everything’ but I’d work on what I had, he said he didn’t want to be asked questions on that – that wasn’t what he wanted – but for me to ask his favourite colour and then I was to tell him how to deliver the answer. This doesn’t work.
For those of you who may agree with Jack I will explain why this is not only not practical but would have been an awful waste of his parents money.
In Order To Learn Interview Technique Preparation You Have To Be Interviewed.
Asking you your favourite colour and why, is not going to help you get a job.
Even prep school applicants ie 5 or 7 yr olds, would be put under more pressure than that.
Interview Technique is learning how to answer difficult probing questions to the best of your ability whilst employing clarity of diction, giving succinct informative answers and maintaining good body language whilst doing so!
Everyone can look confident if there’re talking to their friendly teacher about colours!
Learning Interview Technique Preparation
In order to teach you interview technique properly, I need to ask you investigative questions about the examples you have written on your potential employers’ application forms.
For example the questions that asked you to demonstrate when you showed initiative, displayed excellent team work abilities and problem solving etc
AND I need to spot the holes in any enhanced or exaggerated tales!
I also need to eke out the examples you may not have thought of, or the life experiences you had dismissed as unimportant or irrelevant but that others, especially others older than you, would truly admire.
Interview Technique Preparation Isn’t Just About Eye Contact Or Using Your Core Muscles To Sit Up Straight
It’s about being grounded, confident and focused under pressure.
And, having your stories, questioned and honed, so ready and prepared.
We have to work on real content in order to work on your voice and body language under pressure.
You have to be practised at finding top notch examples of what a good employee you would be.
How you solved a difficult problem or encouraged a colleague.
.. How you took a complicated brief or direction from someone and found a way of making it work.
Being asked difficult questions by me will help you prepare your answers and develop confidence in responding under pressure.
Interview Technique Preparation Practice
In short you cannot learn Interview Technique without feeling some discomfort and uncertainty born out of unexpected pressure under which you are to remain open, responsive connected and concise.
So I need some info before your class, which I will study and prepare to coach you well.
Interview Technique Preparation Content & Delivery
Body Language, diction, clarity and eloquence, enhances the content you will be delivering – this is why it is essential for me to prep your application info beforehand so that then I can focus on how you are coming across.
Also finding holes or anomalies or often finding out better examples of how brilliant you are, will make you feel more armed and better prepared.
Sometimes we are not the best at noticing a fantastic angle about ourselves, that shows grit, determination and creative thinking.
Or maybe you don’t realise that some sort of experience that was customer facing eg working in a pub, or as a waitress shows you are good under pressure and can talk to a huge cross section of people.
Role Playing For You
I really enjoy teaching Interview Technique and employ all my acting skills to create a realistic environment for you.
I also offer you alternative personalities so that you can practice with a noncommittal, poker faced, cold person, versus a friendly, encouraging one, etc, so that you practice being your best with different types of personalities.
You need to be stared at and questioned by a variety of personalities whilst keeping your composure and confidence. 🙂
